Here are some questions we are
often asked. If you have any questions that aren't answered
here, please contact us!
What
system do I need to join your school?
To join NLL you need:
- A PC, or a Mac running VirtualPC, with
a sound-card and a headset. Please do not use speakers,
as these cause echos and feedback.
- Minimum 90MHz processor
- 16 megabytes (MB) of RAM for Microsoft
Windows 95, Windows 98
24 megabytes (MB) of RAM for Microsoft Windows NT version
4.0
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.01
or later (please note that version 4.0 is not enough;
it must be 4.01 or higher)
- A good internet connection (28.8 kbps modem
or faster)
- Microsoft NetMeeting, the free communications
program (Click here to download it

Do I have to have a videocamera/audio
to join your classes?
No, you do not have to have a videocamera to join your
classes. You do need audio so you can speak to your
teacher and the other students, but you do not need a videocamera.

My
microphone doesn't work, what do I do?
First make sure that you weren't listening
to any audio on your computer before you called your teacher.
If you were listening to a RealAudio file, for example, or
a CD, you may not be able to use audio with NetMeeting. If
this happened, hang up your NetMeeting call, turn off the
other audio program and try calling again.
If that doesn't help, try the "Tuning
Wizard". Disconnect from the Internet, then start NetMeeting.
Click on "Tools" at the very top, then "Tuning
Wizard". This will test the microphone and the speakers.
If your microphone still isn't very good,
try this: Again, start NetMeeting, click "Tools"
and "Options" , and look at the "General"
tab. Click on "Bandwidth Settings" - make sure this
is set correctly for the modem or Internet connection you
are using.
If you are using a video camera, pause the
video while you are speaking; this will often make the voice
connection better.

The person I am talking to
can hear me [and see me], but I can't hear [and/or see] him.
What could the problem be?
Your computer may be protected by a firewall, especially if
your computer is on a network. Ask your systems administrator
if this is the case, and if so, refer him/her to our "Firewall
issues" page.
